Zirconium oxide - ZrO2 (Zirconia), colorless crystals, MP= 2715 °C. zirconium Oxide is one of the more refractory metal oxides.
Zirconia exhibits amphoteric properties, insoluble in water and aqueous solutions of most acids and alkalis, but dissolves in hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids, alkaline melts and glasses.
Zirconia exists in three crystalline forms:
stable monoclinic found in nature as the mineral baddeleyite.
metastable medium-temperature tetragonal present in many of Zirconia ceramics. The transition of the tetragonal phase of Zirconia in the monoclinic accompanied by an increase in volume, which increases the strength of these ceramics: mechanical stress at the top of the growing microcracks initiate the phase transition from tetragonal to monoclinic modification, and, as a consequence, local increase in volume and, consequently, the pressure that stabilizes the microcrack, slowing its growth.
unstable high-temperature cubic. Large transparent crystals of cubic Zirconia stabilized with admixtures of oxides of magnesium, yttrium, calcium, cerium or other metals due to their high refractive index and dispersion are used in jewelry as simulated diamond; in the USSR such crystals are called cubic Zirconia, from the Physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences, where they were first synthesized.
In industry the Zirconia used in the manufacture of refractory materials based on zirconium, ceramics, enamels, glass. Used as a superhard material.
