Bentonite is a mineral formations belonging to the class of aluminosilicates having a high dispersion, i.e. with the size of the crystals to less than 1 mBD. and, as a consequence of having a large specific surface area. Features crystal structure of bentonites determine the presence on the surface of ion exchangeable cations, which strongly influence the physico-chemical properties of minerals.
Almost all technical publications of the early 20th century, when considering bentonites are two names: fuller's earth and bentonite. To fulleroid lands since ancient times (from the time of the Roman Empire) added clay, having the ability to absorb the dispersed particles of different sizes. Such clay is used for the cleaning of wool used to manufacture cloth from fat. The fuller in English transcription is translated as synovial. Subsequently it was established that in nature there are two types of fuller clays. Clay of the same type was used as fuller in its natural form, another after chemical processing or activation. Large concentrations of clays of the second type were found near Fort Benton (USA) and was called bentonite. Later mineralogical studies have shown that "fuller's earth and bentonite have almost the same mineral composition.
