Phenolphthalein (4,4'-dioxythiophene or 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)phtalic) is a triphenylmethane dye, an acid-basic indicator that changes color from colorless (at pH < 8,2) to red-purple, raspberry (alkaline); but in concentrated alkali is again colorless. In concentrated sulphuric acid forms a pink cation.
The substance is a colorless crystals, poorly soluble in water but readily in alcohol and diethyl ether.
Phenolphthalein changes color depending on the pH range[. It can exist in several forms, which are transformed into one another when changing acidity.
Used in analytical chemistry when titrations of aqueous solutions (a solution in ethanol).
To detect specific Pro-carcinogenic properties of phenolphthalein over a century was used in medicine as a laxative (Blizzard), although it has cumulative properties and can be irritating to the kidneys.
