Methyl orange (methylorange, eng. Methyl orange, helianthine, sodium 4-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)benzolsulfonat) — known acid-base indicator, synthetic organic dye from the group of azo dyes is the sodium salt.
Used as an acid-base indicator, the titrant in the determination of strong oxidizing agents, spectrophotometric determination of oxidants (chromium, bromine).
A 0.1% aqueous solution is used in analytical chemistry as an indicator.
Changes color from red in acid medium (pH of 3.1 to 4.4) to orange in neutral and yellow in alkaline.
