Methyl red (mutilat, p-dimethylaminoazobenzene-2-carboxylic acid) is a synthetic aniline dye, acid-basic indicator. This purple-red crystals, melting at 175 °C (with decomposition). Poorly soluble in water, soluble in acetic acid, benzene (especially heated), sparingly soluble methanole.
In acidic medium the methyl red turns red in neutral and alkaline yellow (transition from red to yellow at approximately pH range of 4.4 to 6.2).
Is also used for the titration of aliphatic amines in 1,4-dioxane and chloroform. Used in argentometry as adsorption indicator (the color changes from yellow to orange-red). Can be used in the form of water-soluble sodium salt.
