Ceresin is a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons with number of carbon atoms in the molecule is from 36 to 55. Has a molecular weight in the region of 700. Consists mainly of weakly branched isoalkanes, small amounts of alkanes of normal structure, naphthenes with long side cauterizing derived from petroleum feedstock, mainly of petrolatum (a mixture of ceresin, paraffin and petroleum oils) and wax. Also available is a synthetic microcrystalline wax.
Waxy substance white to brown color in water and ethanol insoluble, soluble in benzene. Melting point 65 — 88 °C. depending on the melting temperature (temperature dropping) manufactured brand "65", "70", "75" and "80".
Ceresin is used as a component of greases, insulating material in radio and electrical engineering, impregnation of packaging materials, composed of Vara, a phlegmatizer for explosives. Specially purified grade is used in food and cosmetic industries and in medicine
