Ammonia is one of the most important products of the chemical industry, its annual world production reaches 150 million tons. Mainly used for the production of nitrogen fertilizers (nitrate and ammonium sulfate, urea), explosives and polymers, nitric acid, soda (as an ammonia method) and other products of the chemical industry. Liquid ammonia used as solvent.
In refrigeration is used as a refrigerant (R717).
In medicine a 10% solution of ammonia, frequently called ammonia, is used when fainting (for excitation of breathing), to stimulate vomiting, as well as externally — neuralgia, myositis, insect bites, for treatment of hand surgery. Incorrect use may cause burns of the esophagus and stomach (in case the undiluted solution), the reflex stops breathing (when inhaled in high concentrations).
Antifreeze additive for dry mortar, related to the accelerators. Recommended dosage is 2 to 8 weight % of the dry components of the mixture depending on the temperature application. Ammonia water is the product (NH3*H2O), an ammonia gas NH3 dissolved in water.
