Petroleum ether (petroleum ether, oil of Sherwood) is a mixture of light aliphatic hydrocarbons (pentane and hexanal) produced from associated petroleum gases and light oil fractions. Colorless liquid with a boiling temperature of 40-70 °C (light) and 70-100 °C (heavy), and with density 0,650—0,695 g/cm3. Petroleum ether is a solvent for fats, oils, resins, etc.
In modern industry this mixture of light hydrocarbons is widely used. Light petroleum ether used:
- as a solvent (eluent) in this method of analysis of mixtures as liquid chromatography;
- as a solvent of oils and fats or resins;
- as fuel lighters and warmers;
- in the production process of polyethylene and rubber;
- as the extractor of animal fats in the food industry;
