Hydroxide barium
Barium hydroxide - colourless crystals. The reagent is highly soluble in water (3.75 percent anhydrous Ba(OH)2 at 20 °C) solubility increases with heated. The solution has a strongly alkaline reaction. In contact with air, it absorbs CO2 and becomes cloudy due to formation of insoluble BaCO3. When drying over concentrated H2SO4 barium hydroxide readily loses 7 molecules water of crystallization, complete dehydration is achieved only at 120-150 °C. Melts in the water of crystallization at 78 °C.
Application
Barium hydroxide (hydrate of oxide of barium) is used
• in the refining industry for the production of additives for
oils;
• in non-ferrous metallurgy in the synthesis of phenol-formaldehyde binders, as
the catalyst in the chemical industry;
• in the production of batteries constant current sources;
• upon receipt of a number of salts of reactive skills;
• for purification from sulfate ions in various water-salt systems and more.
