Benzoic acid
Chemical formula: C6H5COOH
Density: 1.32 g / cm3
Registry. CAS number: 65-85-0
Benzoic acid С6Н5СООН is the simplest monobasic carboxylic acid of aromatic series.
Benzoic acid is white crystals, poorly soluble in water, well in ethanol, chloroform and diethyl ether. Benzoic acid such most of the other organic acids, weak acid.
Pure acid has a melting point 122,4 ° C, boiling point 249 ° C.
Easily sublimated; distilled with water vapor, so it is inefficient to increase the concentration of the aqueous benzoic acid solution.
Benzoic acid can be obtained by oxidation of toluene strong oxidizing agents, such as potassium permanganate, chromium oxide (VI), nitric or chromic acid, and phthalic acid decarboxylase.
On an industrial scale of benzoic acid is obtained oxidation of toluene with oxygen on the catalyst (naphthenate of manganese or cobalt).
Benzoic acid is used for production of many chemicals, the most important of them are the following:
C6H5C (O) Cl, is obtained by treatment of benzoic acid thionyl chloride, phosgene or phosphorus chlorides. C6H5C (O) Cl is an important output substance for some derivatives of benzoic acid such as benzyl benzoate, which is used as artificial flavouring repellent.
Benzoic acid and its salts are used in canning food products (food additives Е210, E211, Е212, E213). Benzoic acid by blocking the enzymes, slows metabolism in unicellular organisms. It inhibits the growth of mold, yeast and some bacteria. It is added directly or in the form of sodium, potassium or calcium salt.
The action mechanism starts with the absorption of benzoic acid cell. Because through the wall of the cell can penetrate only nedication acid, benzoic acid exhibits antimicrobial activity only in an acidic food products. The effectiveness of benzoic acid and benzoates depends on the pH of food. Acidic foods, drinks such as fruit juices (citric acid), sparkling drinks (carbon dioxide), soft drinks (phosphoric acid), pickles (vinegar acid) or other acidic food are preserved with benzoic acid and its salts. The typical concentration of benzoic acid for preservation of food 0.05-0.1%. It is believed that benzoic acid and its salts in some soft drinks can to react with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), forming a small amount benzene. But in fact, for the obtaining of benzene from benzoic acid is required the reaction of decarboxylation at high temperature (carbon dioxide gas as a byproduct of the reaction).
Benzoic acid used in medicine for skin diseases as an external antiseptic (antimicrobial) and fungi (antifungal) agent for trihofitii and mycosis, and its sodium salt as expectorant.
Esters of benzoic acid (from methyl to amellago) have a strong odor and are used in the perfume industry. Some other derivatives of benzoic acid, such as, for example, chlorine ntervention acid, are widely used for the synthesis of dyes.
Benzoic acid Packed in four-, five-layer paper bags of 25 kg or in cardboard drums with paper or polyethylene bags-inserts.
