Boric acid
Chemical formula: H3BO3
Density: Of 1.435 (15 °C)
Reg. room CAS no.: 10043-35-3
Boric acid (orthoboric acid or lat. acidum Boricum) is a weak, monobasic the Lewis acid, commonly used as insecticide, antiseptic, flame retardant, neutron absorber, or precursor to obtain a other chemical compositions. Has the chemical formula H3BO3 (or B(OH)3).
Colorless crystalline substance in the form of flakes, odorless, has a layered triclinic lattice in which the acid molecules are connected by hydrogen bonds in a flat layers, the layers are connected by intermolecular bonds (d = 0,318 nm).
Metamora acid (HBO2) is also a colorless crystals. It exists in three versions — the most stable γ-НВО2 with a cubic lattice, β-НВО2 with the monoclinic lattice and the α-НВО2 with rhombic lattice.
When heated, boric acid loses water and passes into the first metabolous acid, then Teterboro H2B4O7. Upon further heating of the dehydrated to boric anhydride.
In nature free boric acid is found in the form of the mineral Sassolini in hot the springs and mineral waters.
Boric acid can be obtained by mixing borax (sodium Tetraborate) mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid.
Also is the product of hydrolysis DIBORANE or trihalogen forest.
Boric acid exhibits very weak acidic properties. It has relatively little soluble in water. Its acid properties are not caused by cleavage of a proton H+, and attach the hydroxyl anion.
It is easy to displaced from solutions of its salts of most other acids. Salt it, called borate, is usually produced from various polimernyh acids, often just tetraboric Н2В4О7, which is much stronger acid than orthoboric.
Very weak signs of being appeared B(OH)3 exhibits, forming the unstable hydrosulfate boron(HSO4)3.
When the neutralization of boric acid with alkali in aqueous solutions are not formed orthoborate containing ion (BO3)3−, as orthoborate hydrolyzed almost completely due to a too small constant education. In the solution formed tetraborate, metaborate or other salt polimernyh acids.
Most common salt boric acid is the decahydrate of sodium tetraborate Na2B4O7•10H2O (technical name — borax).
Boric acid can only be dangerous in the uncontrolled ingestion. Threat concentration in the human body (especially a child) can occur when regular use. Lethal dose when poisoning through the mouth for adult person is 15-20 grams, for children — 4-5 year
Boric acid is used in medicine since the 60-ies of the XIX century as an antiseptic means, not irritating to wounds, and having no taste, odor and color. In the modern medicine antimicrobial efficacy of boric acid is considered low.
Application boric acid:
• In nuclear reactors as the neutron absorber dissolved in the coolant.
• Boric fertilizer.
• In the laboratories used for preparation of buffer solutions.
• In medicine — as an independent disinfectant for adults as well as a 2% solution for washing the skin after contact with alkali.
• On the basis of boric acid produces different combination of drugs (group ATKH D08AD), for example pasta Teymurova.
• In photography the composition of the fine developers and sour fixer to create a weak acidic environment.
• Jewelry — as the basis of fluxes for soldering of gold alloys.
• In foundry — binding agent for acid lining of furnaces, the protection component of the jet from the oxidation of the casting magnesium alloys.
• In life — the destruction of cockroaches, ants, bedbugs.
• In the manufacture of ceramics, fiber, fiberglass, and glass.
• As a flame retardant to protect wood.
• In the composition of electrolytes for copper plating and Nickel plating.
When transportation in assembled cars or mixed message is for long-term storage of boric acid is Packed in five-layer paper bags brand NM with polyethylene liner. Keep it in a dry place without foreign smell.
