Potassium dichromate
Potassium bichromate (dichromate, bichromate) K2Cr2O7, red crystals; tmelting 396 0C, t decomposition over 610 0C; soluble in water (13% at 25 0C), not soluble in alcohol. In nature the mineral is lopezit.
Obtaining potassium dichromate:interaction with Na2Cr2O7 Kcl; chrome fusion with potash in the presence of O2 in air subsequent leaching with water and treatment with H2SO4.
Dichromate potassium (potassium dichromate, potassium dichromate, potassium bichromate) is used:
- as the tanning agent in the leather industry for tanning of hides and sheepskins;
- as a component in the manufacture of dyes and inorganic pigments;
- as the oxidizing agent in mixtures for heads of matches, pyrotechnic and graphic arts formulations;
- as a component of dry electrolytes;
- as corrosion inhibitor of metals and alloys;
- as mordant to seeds;
- as a reagent in chromatomyia.
Chrome a mixture consisting of potassium dichromate and concentrated sulfuric acid, use for washing of chemical dishes.
