Sebacic acid
Sebacic acid (decandia acid) HOOC(CH2)8СООН — dibasic limit carboxylic acid(lat. sebaceus — candle oil, lard). Has all chemical properties characteristic of carboxylic acids. Salts and esters sebacic acid called sabarimalai.
In industry sebacic acid is mainly produced from castor oil. When heated with water (200-225 °C; 1.8 to 2.5 MPa), glycerol is formed and a mixture of carboxylic acids containing 80 to 85 % of ricinoleic acid; the decomposition last alkali, at 250 °C with subsequent saponification of the resulting sebacate of sodium mineral acids results in the production of sebacic acid (yield — 35-40 % based on castor oil).
Promising the method of producing sebacic acid — anodic condensation of monomethylamine to dimethylcarbonate with subsequent hydrolysis of the diester. The process is carried out in methanol on the electrodes of platinized titanium at current density of 600-1500 A/m2, a temperature of 45-55 °C, hydrolysis of the diester is carried out in excess water (220-240V °C; 3,9-4,9 MPa); a yield of sebacic acid in this case is 70-75 %.
When the recovery of the sebacic acid formed is 1,10-decandiol; under the action of Br2 at sebacate silver — 1,8-dibromobutane; dehydration of ammonium salts or the diamide — sebaconitrile. Heating sebacic acid with acetic anhydride leads to the formation of unstable polymeric anhydride, splits and turns into CO2, ciclesonide.
Sebacic acid capable of polycondensation with bifunctional compounds: glycol forms polyesters [-OROCO(CH2)8CO-]n; with diamines and amino alcohols. — corresponding polyamides and polyaminoamide [-XRNHCO(CH2)8CO-]n (X = O, NH).
Temperature decarboxylation 350-370 °C.

Sebacic the acid used in industry for the production of polyhexamethylenediamine (nylon-1,6), polyester fibers, and adhesives in as the stabilizer of alkyd resins. Used in the production of hydraulic fluids, cosmetics, candles, etc. is Also intermediate in the manufacture of antiseptics. Esters of sebacic acid used dibutyl and dioctylsebacate as plasticizers in PVC diisobutylamine — plasticized number of elastomers. Di(2-ethylhexyl)sebacate part of the oils and lubricants used at low temperatures.
Esters sebacic acid — combustible low-toxic substances; for dibutylsebacate LD50 of 25.5 g/kg; for dioctylsebacate — 19,6 g/kg, TLV 10 mg/m3.
World manufacture of sebacic acid and its esters — more than 300,000 t/year.
Sebacic the acid used in industry for the production of:
- polyamide plastics, in particular for the production of polyhexamethylenediamine (nylon-10,6), polyester fibers, adhesives, as the stabilizer of alkyd resins;
- cold-resistant plasticizers. Esters of sebacic acid is used dibutyl- and dioctylsebacate as plasticizers of PVC, diisobutylamine - plasticized number of elastomers, and also finds applications demethylthebaine. In addition, the esters used in the production of hydraulic fluids. Di(2-ethylhexyl)sebacate is part of the oils and greases used in low temperatures;
- alkyd resins, maleic and other esters (as stabilizer);
- polyurethanes, paint and coatings industry.
Also used in the manufacture of cosmetics, candles, etc. Is an intermediate element in the manufacture of antiseptics.
Sebacic acid is Packed in paper or polypropylene bags with net weight 25kg. Product transporterowych rail and road transport in accordance with the shipping rules applicable on the respective transport.
Sebacic acid should be stored in the manufacturer's packaging in covered, dry, well ventilated warehouses.
