Adipic acid

 

Adipic acid (hexandione acid) HOOC(CH2)4СООН — ultimate dibasic carboxylic acid. Has all the chemical properties characteristic of carboxylic acids. Adipic acid is an organic acid which is one of the most important synthetic dicarboxylic acids.

Is a colorless crystalline powder with monoclinic crystals.

Forms salts, most of which are soluble in water.

Adipic acid is obtained by oxidation cyclohexane passing in two stages. Also the product obtained when the interaction of cyclohexane with nitric acid or ozone. One of the promising methods of obtaining is gidrogenizirovanii butadiene. In the world produces 2.5 million tons / year adipic acid.

Adipic acid is used in various fields of human activity. It is the main raw material in the production of polyhexamethylenediamine and its esters and polyurethanes. In addition, adipic acid is used as plasticizer in production of plastics, used in printing industry for the production of paper of high quality, used in pharmaceuticals and production of diesters and dyes.

In the food industry adipic acid has found application as a dietary Supplement, the amplifier sour taste – Е355. Most often it is used for the production non-alcoholic beverages. Of course, adipic acid as the acidifier often just inferior to, for example, citric acid, however, in gelatinous products it's better to use it in connection with its ability to enhance education jelly. Therefore, the use of adipic acid for the production of jelly, jams, and gelatine desserts helps to reduce the consumption of gelatin and other protein ingredients.

Adipic acid is used as a mild acidifier with a low hygroscopicity and sour taste long-lasting, such as in chewing gum up to 3%; in desserts to 0.6%; in baking mixes to 0.4%; in dry mixtures for beverages up to 1% (in terms of ready-to-eat product).

Е355 allowed in desserts flavored dry up to 1 g/kg of product; in mixtures powder for making beverages in the home in an amount up to 10 g/kg; in toppings, finishing foods for butter bakery products and flour confectionery products, etc. in amounts up to 2 g/kg for alone or in combination with other adipate in terms of acid.

Adipic acid belongs to 3rd class of hazard. Low-toxic, - flammable, explosive dust. Use it together with food acceptable in normal doses, that, in fact, refers to any chemical additives to food. Excessive dosing may have a negative impact on the human body.

The main advantage of adipic acid to other acids (hydrochloric, acetic, etc.) is allowed transportation to bags using any kind of transport. Transportation other acids only allowed in bulk in special tanks, which significantly increases logistics costs and the cost of the final product.
