Magnesium chloride

Magnesium chloride (magnesium chloride) — binary inorganic chemical compound of magnesium with chlorine, a magnesium salt of hydrochloric acid. Soluble in water, ethanol. Found in nature as the mineral bischofite.

Colorless crystals, the density of 2,316 g/cm3, the melting temperature of 713 °C, boiling point 1412 °C magnesium Chloride is highly hygroscopic; solubility in water at 20 °C — 35.3% by weight. Magnesium chloride forms crystalline hydrates with 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 water molecules. In the interval from -3,4 to 116,7 °C stable hydrate{\displaystyle {\mathsf {MgCl_{2}\cdot 6H_{2}O}}},, which is found in nature in the form of the mineral bischofiteand in large amounts obtained by evaporation of sea brines.

Application

· Chloride magnesium is mainly used in the production of magnesium metal, MgCl2·6H2O is used to obtain magnesia cement.

· Used to handle ice and snow cover as a Supplement. The result reaction with the snow causing it to melt. A 3rd class of hazard (moderately hazardous substances) and corrosive properties.

In the food industry

Magnesium chloride registered as a food additive E511.

Most often in the food industry additive Е511 used as a hardener. In some products, magnesium chloride is used as a salt substitute, a carrier-filler. Not rare to find this food the additive in the composition of canned cucumbers and tomatoes, fruits, berries, green peas and corn. The substance prevents the softening of preservation. Often magnesium chloride acts as a breeding ground for yeast. E-511 add in the production of infant formula and some soft drinks. In Japan, the magnesium chloride included in the composition to soy milk has been curdled and strained to the manufacture of tofu. In the chemical industry Е511 appears in the production of magnesium metal. Also magnesium chloride is a deicer, is included in the composition of the antifreeze. Reduces the number of dust particles in the air.
