Boric acid analytical grade
A colorless crystalline substance in the form of flakes, odorless, has a layered triclinic lattice, in which the acid molecules are connected by hydrogen bonds in flat layers, the layers are connected by intermolecular bonds. Weak acid, sparingly soluble in cold water, preferably in the hot than I use to clean it (the solubility in grams per 100 g of H₂O: 2,66 at 0 °C and 39.7 at 100 °C). In mineral acids soluble worse than in water and in salt solutions better. Solubility in ethanol 5,56 g, 28 g of glycerol, ether 0,0078 g in 100 ml. of Boric acid is soluble in alcohol, acetone, dioxane, pyridine. Practically insoluble in ether.
Pharmacological action:
Boric acid has antiseptic (disinfectant) activity. The local application (as an ointment) also antipedikuleznoe (aimed at the destruction of lice) action.
The drug is well absorbed through skin and mucous membranes, especially in children of early age; slowly excreted and can accumulate in organs and tissues.
Application:
in industry for the production of special borosilicate glass, resistant to sudden temperature changes. Boric acid is used in the manufacture of enamels, pigments, cements, fluxes, corrosion inhibitors, flame retardants, detergents and cosmetics;
- in nuclear reactors as a neutron absorber dissolved in the coolant;
- as boric fertilizer;
- in the laboratories used for the preparation of buffer solutions;
- in medicine - as an independent weak, not irritating the tissue antiseptic and disinfectant. Boric acid is used externally in form of aqueous and alcoholic solutions, ointments, pastes, and is prescribed in powder for skin diseases;
- in photography, in composition of fine-grained developers and acidic fixer to create a weak acid environment;
- in cooking - as a preserving agent, registered as a food additive E284;
- in the home used as an insecticide to control ants and cockroaches.
