Ethylene glycol

Ethylene glycol (the glycol; 1,2-dioxetane; 1,2-ethanediol), HO—CH2—CH2—OH is the simplest representative polyhydric alcohols. Ethylene glycol is widely it is used as a coolant in heating systems and heating as a cooling medium in cooling systems, the production of automotive antifreeze, toolow, brake, hydraulic liquids. More glycol used in the manufacture of synthetic fibers, resins, solvents, polyurethanes, explosives, dyes, leather and pharmacological industries.

In a purified form is a clear, colourless liquid, slightly oily consistency. The substance is odorless and has slightly sweet taste, with its use leads to death. Ethylene glycol (synonyms: monoethylene glycol, MEG) is the simplest diatomic alcohol and is a colorless viscous liquid, almost odorless. Water-soluble, alcohol, acetone. In industry, ethylene glycol is get the three major methods: hydrolysis of ethylene chlorhydrin, the hydrolysis of dichloroethane and hydration ethylene oxide. Currently, the latter method is the most widely used.

Ethylene glycol has a different application. The ethylene glycol used in the synthesis of important organic compounds, including polymers, as a solvent, and even in the production of inks and pastes for ballpoint pens. An interesting application ethylene glycol is found as a low-freezing-point fluid (antifreeze). It replace the water, where the water is not "cope", not only because of lower freezing point but a higher boiling point. Examples of the use of ethylene glycol coolant in engines internal combustion heat carrier in systems of heating the cooling medium in cooling systems, defrost in aviation.

Appearance: colorless a viscous fluid. The contents of ethylene glycol according to GOST 19710-78 - 99% for the highest grade and 98.5% for first grade. Mass fraction of diethylene glycol — not more than 0.1% for the highest grade. Mass fraction of water not more than 0.1%. Density: 1.13 g/cm3, the freezing temperature of 17.5°C, a boiling point of +197°C. As a substance containing hydroxyl groups, ethylene glycol has similar properties with Monohydric alcohols. When interacting with hydrohalic acids the substitution of the hydroxyl group. The ethylene glycol should be packaged only in aluminum drums or barrels made of corrosion-resistant steel. According to GOST 19710-78 ethylene glycol, Packed in barrels in covered transporterowych vehicles for all modes of transport, and railway tanks.

Stored in barrels in covered non-heated warehouses. Ethylene glycol is toxic. You can not avoid exposure inside of the body. Maximum permissible concentration in the air of working zone - 5 mg/m3. Belongs to the third class of hazard, GOST 12.1.005. Due to the low the vapor pressure does not cause acute poisoning if inhaled.
