Oats – an annual plant, herbaceous species, belonging to the grass family. Can reach a meter in height. Flowering oats in late may or early June.
The plant belongs to a relatively cold-resistant cultures. The optimum temperature for seed germination is 1-2°C. Seedlings emerge in 3-4°C. At the stage of germination and tillering favourable temperature is from 15 to 18°C. the Seedlings can tolerate short periods of temperatures down to -9°C. Flowering plants are less resistant to frost. Favorable temperature for flowering oats and 18-20°C heat. In the period of milk stage of the grain, the plant is more resistant to short frosts up to -5°C. the Oat is killed when the air temperature is over 40°C.
Good precursors for oat-growing is potatoes, beans, corn and winter crops. The cultivation of oats in the same plot 2 years in a row is not desirable. It is also not advisable to sow oats after the beet – it contributes to the spread of nematodes – common pest.
Sowing oats is the same with planting of spring crops – late April, while the soil is still moist.
Sowing oats is carried out in the early stages of continuous ordinary, narrow and cross-ways. Optimal planting depth in moist areas, 3-4 cm, 5-6 cm in aridDuration of sowing - 5 days.
Oats belongs to the cultures of long daylight hours. The length of the growing season affects the grade of oats. The average is 70-130 days.
Oats ripens unevenly within panicles. The ripening starts from periphery and the upper spikelets of the panicle . Oats harvested by direct combining in the phase of full ripeness when the grain moisture content not more than 20%, seed plots - not more than 15%.
