Copper sulphate is 99.1% of the highest grade. Copper sulfate(II) (copper sulphate) is an inorganic binary compound, a copper salt of sulfuric acid with the formula CuSO4. Non-volatile, odorless. Anhydrous substance colorless, opaque, very hygroscopic. The crystalline transparent nephroscope crystals in shades of blue with a bitter, metallic taste in the air gradually erode (lose water of crystallization). Sulphate of copper(II) is highly soluble in water. From aqueous solution crystallizes blue pentahydrate CuSO4·5H2O copper sulphate. The toxicity of copper sulfate to warm-blooded animals is relatively low, at the same time it is very toxic to fish.
The hydration reaction of anhydrous copper sulfate(II) exothermic and takes place with considerable evolution of heat.
In nature it occurs in the form of minerals chalcanthite (CuSO4·5H2O), chalcogenide (CuSO4), banatica (CuSO4·3H2O), butit (CuSO4·7H2O), and other minerals.
Has antibacterial, antiseptic, astringent properties. Used in medicine, in crop production as an antiseptic, a fungicide or a copper-sulfur fertilizer.
