Obtaining red lead
Lead oxide is produced in chemical plants by spraying molten lead metal in air or oxygen and rapid cooling of the product obtained. Another, less common method is the heating and oxidation of the molten lead in the atmosphere of oxygen; the oxides are further ground in mills. The obtained lead oxide is Packed into steel, wood or plastic drums, as well as in multiwall paper bags of 50 kg or less. Designed for the production of high-quality paint or filling of plastics and rubber lead oxide subjected to careful grinding in jet mills, and intended for the production of batteries prepared from chemically pure lead.
The use of red lead
Lead oxide has application as a very high quality orange pigment and soil, and is also used as a filler rubber products and plastics. Lead oxide is a strong oxidizer, and this is due to the high anti-corrosion properties of paints based on it: it reacts with iron, it oxidizes it to obtain a thick film of black iron oxide(II), insoluble in water and impermeable to oxygen from the air. Covered with lead minium steel construction will not rust even in sea water, but in most countries the manufacture of paint of red lead is severely limited due to its toxicity. A large volume of usage is the use of red lead in glassmaking (glass, optical glass, radiation-resistant and shielding glass). Specific value it has as a desiccant, catalyst, component "caulking lead". Small in volume but very important sector of the use of red lead is its use to protect against gamma radiation and other lead compounds: dioxide, carbonate, acetate, etc. A small but important lead, the red lead is in the production of thermite explosives.
Minium in the form of PbO (Pb3O4 sometimes) is one of the main reagents of the assay, collectious noble metals from the melt ore mixture. The degree of solubility of gold and silver in the lead, the resulting assay melting is unlimited.
