Potassium sulfate (K2SO4)"H"
potassium sulfate, K2SO4, a salt; colorless crystals, density of 2.66 g/cm3, melting point 1074 °C. the solubility of 11.1 g per 100 g H2O at 20 °C, 24,1 g at 100 °C. the S. C. is part of the natural potassium salts (Cm. Potassium salts), such as Sanita K2SO4·MgSO4·6H2O, from which it is extracted. It is used to produce alum, potash. In agriculture K. S. is used as a concentrated chlorine-free potassium fertilizer (Cm. Potash); contains not less than 45-52% K2O, not more than 1% MgO and no more than 10% moisture. Used primarily for crops sensitive to chloride (potato, tobacco, flax, grapes, citrus, etc.). The presence in the fertilizer sulfate ion has a positive effect on the yield of plants of the family Cruciferae (cabbage, rutabaga, turnips, etc.) and legumes, consuming a lot of sulfur. When heated, K. S. with strong sulfuric acid sour salt is potassium hydrogen sulfate (bisulfate): K2SO4 + H2SO4 = 2KHSO4, which is higher in melting point 210 °C changes in the potassium pyrosulfite: 2KHSO4 = K2S2O7 + H2O, and then, in K. S. and sulphuric anhydride: K2S2O7 = K2SO4 + SO3. This reaction is used to translate sparingly soluble in acids substances (for example, calcined Al2O3, Fe2O3, CrO3) to soluble sulfates. KHSO4 is also used as a flux in metallurgy.
