Description: Igital finds wide application in pyrotechnics as a component which is both a fuel and a binder. Iditol is "Novolac resin obtained by condensation of an excess of phenol with formaldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst (such as Hcl). The primary product of condensation polymerizing goes when heated in a resin. When calculating for iditol use conditional formula C13H12O2. Iditol very soluble in ethyl alcohol. Novolac resins are readily soluble in alcohols, insoluble in hydrocarbons and mineral oils. They are resistant to water, acids, ammonia and weak alkaline solutions. A strong solution of alkali decomposes them. Technical samples of iditol always contain free phenol, which explains their reddish coloring. For iditol normalized softening temperature (for different grades not lower than 90 to 97°C), the content of phenol (0.1 to 3.0%) and tests for the absence of rosin.
