In pumps of the type the pumped medium is moved in the periodic changes in the volume it occupies the cavity, alternately communicating with the inlet and outlet of the pump.

The main parameters that characterize the work of a volumetric pump, are pressure, flow, pump power, speed, efficiency and permissible vacuum suction head.

The pump pressure is determined by the difference of levels in the suction and pressure vessels, pressure and hydraulic resistance of pipelines. The maximum allowable pressure is determined by the strength of the working bodies of the pump and the engine, therefore, the excess specified in the catalog pressure without approval the manufacturer is not allowed.

The volumetric flow of the pump is determined by the size of its working bodies, speed as well as pressure and viscosity of the pumped fluid; from the latter depends on the size of the internal volume of losses.
