antifriction alloy based on tin or lead, intended to be used in the form of a layer, the cast or sprayed on the enclosure liner of the bearing.

The most common variations of the chemical composition of the alloy:

  • 90 % tin, 10 % copper;
  • 89 % tin, 7 % antimony, 4 % copper;
  • 80 % lead, 15 % antimony, 5 % tin.

As the alloying additives can be used: antimony, copper, Nickel, arsenic, cadmium, tellurium,calcium, sodium, magnesium.

The melting temperature is 300-440 °C.

The first bearing alloy[1] was developed by American Isaac Babbitt[2] in 1839.
