From the Vedic literature Bhagavad-Gita is the only Scripture that reveals fully the essence of all Vedic philosophy, and perhaps the only Scripture on Earth that is so full, deep and scientific ties of the religious-philosophical aspect of the material.
Bhagavad-Gita is unique in that it can serve as a practical guide in spiritual and material spheres of life. Therefore Bhagavad-Gita has been described as one of the most respected and valued spiritual and philosophical texts in the religious and philosophical traditions around the world.
What is important to know before reading Bhagavad-Gita?
In the Bhagavad-Gita the Lord tells Arjuna that He explains this Supreme secret to him because Arjuna is His devotee, friend and direct pupil. And this is very important because Bhagavad-gītā is especially meant for the devotee of the Lord. And to best understand the Bhagavad-gītā, a person must possess the same qualities. This means that he must be a devotee in a direct relationship with Him.
And this speaks to Arjuna. To understand the Personality of Godhead is extremely difficult, it not under force even to the great demigods in all respects superior people. So how can a human being understand Lord śrī kṛṣṇa without becoming His devotee? So to study Bhagavad-gītā should be with devotion and humility.
Thus, to begin to accept on faith the words of the Bhagavad-Gita or the words of Arjuna, who tries to understand Bhagavad-gītā, and at least theoretically accept Sri Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Only in this humble state of mind the person has a chance to understand Bhagavad-gītā.
